As a public service, I've tried to put together a short "guidebook" to Atlanta using readily available links to help people starting to plan for their visits to my favorite town. Enjoy:
First, the foundation of my site is Six Flags Over Georgia so you probably want to check out sixflags.com/georgia/.
For news and information around town (including weather and traffic links), go to Access Atlanta accessatlanta.com
Traffic sucks in Atlanta most of the time. Check it out at accessatlanta.com/news/traffic/
Worse for some than traffic is the pollen count. Check it out at aaaai.org/nab/southAtlantic.htm or use the direct link to Atlanta's results http://www.aaaai.org/scripts/nab/cityDetail.asp?City=Atlanta&State=Ga&Region=southAtlantic
Avoid traffic by taking MARTA, Atlanta's Bus & Subway system serving Fulton & Dekalb counties. There's even a subway station at the airport. Check itsmarta.com for more information. Cobb Community Transit (CCT) serves the Cobb County (Marietta) area, but they only have a phone number (770) 427-4444. For rail related activities in Georgia, check out GaRail.com. For true railfans you might want to check out the Southeastern Railway Museum.
You can check airline departure / arrival information at or just checkout the busiest airport in the world at www.atlanta-airport.com/index2.html
The Atlanta Convention & Visitor's Bureau has a site at www.acvb.com
Another hot spot for visitors is The Varsity. Answer the question "whaddyahave?" at thevarsity.com I'll take a smothered dog, frosted orange and a fried apple pie, please.
And a great breakfast treat are some "Hot Donuts Now!" Get this melt-in-your-mouth treat at Krispy Kreme KrispyKreme.com
I live in Marietta, Georgia, home of the "Big Chicken." What is the "Big Chicken?" Go to bigchicken.com Sadly there are no photographs of the building, but the illustrations will give you an idea. PS, there's a Krispy Kreme just 3 blocks south on US41.
For other activities (who's got the time?) you could visit Stone Mountain Park stonemountainpark.com or Six Flags White Water, my favorite water park on earth, whitewaterpark.com.
About one hour and a half north of town is a traditional amusement park Lake Winnepesaukah. It has a smaller cousin of SFOG's Great American Scream Machine, and the park has a lot of charm. LakeWinnie.com
Another park you might want to check out (though is 3 1/2 hours away in Valdosta, GA) is Wild Adventures Wild-Adventure.com(home of the semi-famous to RRC Zebra logo)
Anyway, that should get you started. Enjoy!
